Network monitoring and administration

The point is not being able to fix the network but hearing about faults before the staff do. Monitoring catches a degrading link and a rising port error count long before it turns into a stream of complaints.

What the work includes

We watch not only whether a node responds but the quality too: a link can answer while losing every tenth packet.

Discuss the scope

Hardware

Whether a node responds, how loaded it is, whether it is overheating, how many port errors there are, whether the power supplies are alive.

Links

For each provider separately: throughput, latency, packet loss.

Testing the redundancy

We regularly simulate a failure of the main link. Untested redundancy usually does not work.

Permissions

Firewall rules, contractor access, a separate network for guests.

Firmware

We update in agreed windows and always with a rollback plan.

Documentation

The diagram and configurations are kept alive rather than written once at launch.

How it goes

Connecting it takes two or three days, after which the support runs continuously and the summary arrives monthly.

01

Inventory

What hardware is installed, which links there are, who is connected to what.

02

We connect the monitoring

Collecting the metrics, the alert thresholds, the routes alerts take to the duty engineer.

03

We tidy up

Updates, factory passwords, unnecessary access exposed to the outside.

04

We run it

We respond to events, do the scheduled work and report on outages and utilisation.

A backup link that has never been tested is not redundancy but optimism. It may have been cut off for non-payment, misconfigured, or set to switch over only by hand. A quarterly test turns faith into a verifiable fact.

Questions and answers

The basic set is enough: whether the equipment responds, how loaded the links are, whether port errors are accumulating, whether the disk holding the logs is filling up. That minimum catches most problems early, and the list is extended after the next unusual incident.

To the duty engineer rather than a shared mailbox. An email read once a day is no different from no email at all. We set the thresholds so there is no stream of false alerts, otherwise people stop reacting to them.

Usually not. For a typical estate freely available tools are enough, and we take on installing and configuring them. A commercial product is justified when there are many sites and reporting is required in a strict format.

We will take the network under watch

Tell us how many sites you have and what hardware is installed. We will connect the monitoring and set up alerts to the duty engineer.
