IT infrastructure

Very few plan their estate in advance. Usually it accretes in layers: a machine bought here, a domestic router plugged in there because something was urgent. We take those layers apart and turn them into a diagram showing what rests on what and what the failure of each node would mean.

How the survey works

One working week and almost no distraction for your staff. The outcome is a document you can already build a budget from.

01

We gather the data

We count the workstations, servers, active equipment and subscriptions. We mark what is in use and what is sitting idle.

02

We map the dependencies

We map the dependencies. As a rule this is the step at which it emerges that the whole organisation rests on a single ancient box in the corner.

03

We weigh the risks

We rate every finding by how likely it is and what the consequences would cost: what needs acting on now and what can wait until the next financial year.

04

We hand over the report

We hand over the diagram, the list of risks and a costed programme of work. The document stays with you whether you continue with us or not.

Your own machine or a server

Server-hosted desktops do not suit everyone. Below is an honest comparison so the choice is made deliberately rather than following a trend.

Option 1

Local workplaces

The familiar option: both the working environment and the files sit on the computer itself.

Cost to start
Cheaper, the hardware is already bought
A lost laptop
Data can leak
A new employee
Buy and configure a machine
Working without the internet
Possible
Heavy graphics and CAD
Carries on as normal

Option 2

VDI

Everything is computed on the server and the device serves only as a screen and keyboard.

Cost to start
More expensive, a server is needed
A lost laptop
The files stayed on the server
A new employee
Access is granted in minutes
Working without the internet
Not possible
Heavy graphics and CAD
A separate option is needed

What to choose

The options coexist happily: some people move to virtual desktops while others stay on their own machines.

Local workplaces
A small office with a stable team
VDI
High staff turnover, branches, working from home
A mixed setup
Designers on their own machines, everyone else on the server

An undocumented estate exists only in one person's head. The difference is not felt until the day they go on holiday and the machine refuses to start.

Questions and answers

Yes, if it is an ordinary office and you are open in principle to working together afterwards. The document with the diagram stays with you whatever happens. With several addresses the effort rises considerably and the survey is priced separately.

Not necessarily. For organisations of up to twenty staff without large databases it is usually cheaper to rent resources and do without a dedicated room altogether. The decision comes down to data storage requirements, the response speed you need and whether you have someone able to look after the equipment.

For a team of fifteen to thirty people it takes from two weeks to a month, counting from when the premises are ready: cabling, hardware, accounts, permissions. The longest wait is not for us but for the provider to run the line and for the hardware to arrive.

That is what most people do. Those handling confidential data or changing frequently are moved to server-hosted desktops, while designers and engineers stay on their own machines.
