Choosing the approach
A shared terminal server, personal virtual desktops, or a secure connection to the computers already sitting in the office.
We choose the approach to fit the tasks: terminal access costs less, full virtual desktops give more freedom.
A shared terminal server, personal virtual desktops, or a secure connection to the computers already sitting in the office.
We stand up the server side, sizing the capacity by the number of people working at once.
A new starter gets a ready environment from a template in minutes rather than days.
A connection through a tunnel with phone confirmation rather than a port open to the world.
Blocking copying, printing and USB sticks where that is justified.
Redirecting home printers and scanners into the session. That is what most complaints come from.
A department of twenty or thirty people is deployed in a week or two including the testing.
How many people work at the same time and in which applications. The server capacity follows from that.
We take a few people from different departments: everyone has different software and different habits.
The core, environment templates, access rules.
We migrate staff in groups, with guides and close support in the first days.
Printing is the main source of complaints when moving to virtual desktops. A printer sitting in an employee's home does not always connect to the session first time, and to them that looks like a broken system. Printer redirection has to be sorted out during the pilot, not after the whole company has been migrated.
A few megabits is quite enough, because only the screen image travels. What hurts is not narrow bandwidth but an unstable connection that keeps dropping. Video meetings are better run on the laptop itself, bypassing the remote session.
Then nothing works, and that is a fundamental limitation of the approach. Anyone who needs to work offline should have an ordinary laptop with an encrypted disk rather than a server-hosted desktop.
Over three years the sums are comparable: the server side needs more investment, but the devices themselves and their upkeep cost less. The main benefit lies not in the budget but in keeping the data safe and in how quickly a new employee can start work.
Tell us how many people work remotely and in which applications. We will choose an approach and price it.
