This work is commissioned when nobody in the company can say clearly how many servers there are, where the backups go and who holds which passwords. We gather it all into one picture and set it down in a document that then lives with you.

What the work includes

We examine not only the technology but the procedures: how access is granted, what happens on the day someone leaves, who is responsible for the backups.

Discuss the scope

Inventory

Computers, servers and network hardware with models, age and remaining warranty.

Licences

What is paid for against what is actually used. Something paid for and unused turns up almost every time.

Network diagram

An up-to-date topology with addresses and segments. Quite often it is the first such drawing in the company's history.

Backups

Whether there are any at all, what goes into them, where they sit and whether anyone has restored one.

Access

Accounts, administrator rights, forgotten logins of leavers, where the passwords are kept.

An automated network scan plus an inspection of the server room and interviews with the administrators.

We check

We try restoring a backup, look at what is exposed to the outside and check that updates are being installed.

We compare

We compare what we found with how it should be and weigh the consequences of each gap.

We hand over

Documentation of the estate and a plan of work with priorities and costs.

The documentation stays yours whether or not the work continues. That is a point of principle: a document you can hand to any contractor removes your dependence on whoever wrote it.

Questions and answers

Usually one person knows, and far from everything. Time after time the survey finds a door left open to the outside and forgotten, working logins of people who left long ago, a machine without a single patch in two years and backups never once tested for restore. There is no reproach here: that is roughly how every company looks.

No. The collection runs in the background and inspecting the server room takes a couple of hours. Only the test restore is agreed separately, and we do it on a test environment.

You will not have to. The material is written in detail: an outside contractor or your own specialist can work from it. We do give the figures for fixing things, but the decision remains entirely yours.
