Network equipment

Complaints that the internet is slow are almost never about the internet. More often the culprit is an overloaded router, a single access point for a whole floor or an old cable in the wall. Until the network is laid out on a diagram, looking for the cause is pointless.

What the work includes

Hardware is chosen to fit the design, and the design to fit the building layout and what travels over the network.

Discuss the scope

Switches

Managed, with segments and power over twisted pair for cameras and access points.

Routing

We size capacity by the number of people and by the volume of encrypted traffic if secure tunnels are in use.

The wireless part

We place access points from the plan, allowing for walls and the density of people, not one per floor.

Unified management

All access points are configured together, roaming between them is seamless, and guests get a separate network.

A backup provider

A second link with automatic failover where downtime is unacceptable.

Documentation

A diagram, addressing, passwords in a vault, a short set of instructions.

How it goes

An office of up to a hundred people takes two to three weeks including the wait for delivery.

01

Survey

Layout, the number of devices, what travels over the network, what people complain about.

02

Diagram

A network design, a hardware list, access point placement on the plan.

03

Installation

We install, connect and configure the segments and access rules.

04

Handover

We hand over the diagram and access and show the standard operations.

A new access point will not save you if a twenty-year-old cable runs to it. The category and condition of the wiring limit speed more firmly than the model of the equipment. Before replacing hardware it is worth checking what lies inside the walls.

Questions and answers

Definitely. A guest laptop may be infected, and on a shared network it gains access to your folders and servers. A separate segment with internet-only access is configured in half an hour and closes that hole.

We see where the bottleneck is. If people complain about wireless in the far rooms, it is the access points. If everyone is slow, including over cable, it is the router. Replacing everything at once is rarely required.

Physically it works for seven to ten years, but firmware updates for old models stop being issued, and that is a security matter. Go by the manufacturer support period, not by whether the light is on.

We will design the office network

Send the floor plan and describe what is wrong. We will draw a design and cost the equipment.
