A request to build something more powerful almost always ends in overpaying for the wrong thing. A fast processor will not help if memory is the constraint, and a fast disk is useless when cores are short. So we start with measurements, not with a catalogue.

What the work includes

It all starts with answering the question of what exactly is the ceiling right now, and the answer is often unexpected.

Discuss the scope

Measurements

We take readings during real work: core utilisation, memory usage, the queue to the drive.

Costing

We choose components to address the bottleneck we found and explain why each of them is needed.

Three options

A minimum, a sensible option and one with headroom. We show the difference in money and in return in figures.

Build

Careful assembly, compatibility checks, considered cooling and tidy cable routing.

Burn-in

We run them under load before handover: component defects show up in the first twenty-four hours.

Warranty

Components under the manufacturer warranty; we answer for assembly and compatibility ourselves.

The costing takes a day or two; assembly runs for several days after the components arrive.

Saving on the power supply devalues the rest of the build. A cheap unit delivers unstable voltage, so the machine reboots for no obvious reason, and when it fails it takes the board and the drive with it. This is the one component you must never economise on.

Questions and answers

By nothing, if the task is standard: a ready model has a single warranty and predictable servicing. A custom build is needed where ready options simply do not exist: a specific graphics card, many drives, a non-standard case, work in a dusty room.

You can, if the parts are compatible and not too old. We will check and tell you honestly if something is dragging the system down. In that case the warranty covers our work and the components we supplied ourselves.

From twelve to twenty-four hours at full load. That is enough to reveal memory faults, overheating and unstable power. Finding such things before handover is far cheaper than a month later at the workstation.

We will size the configuration

Write what the task is and what the budget is. First we measure the current load; sometimes no purchase is needed.
