UPS and cooling

The point of an uninterruptible power supply is not to keep working through an outage but to give the equipment a few minutes to shut down cleanly. A sudden loss of power under load damages databases more often than any other cause.

What the work includes

Two figures are needed: how many watts to carry and how many minutes to last until a clean shutdown.

Discuss the scope

Load

We total the consumption and add headroom: over the years batteries deliver less than the rating states.

Device type

Simple topology suffices for network hardware; servers need double conversion.

A shutdown command

We link the power unit to the servers so that on discharge they shut down by themselves and in order.

Alerts

Alerts about power loss, battery condition and an approaching replacement.

Climate

A split system sized by heat output with headroom for hot weeks.

Checks

Regular load testing and planned battery replacement before failure rather than after.

How it goes

Selection and installation take one to two weeks; climate control depends on whether the room is ready.

01

Measurement

We calculate consumption and heat from the ratings, then check against instruments.

02

Selection

Model, capacity, runtime, whether extra batteries are needed.

03

Installation

We install it, connect it, link it to the servers and test the shutdown.

04

Schedule

A calendar of checks and replacements, alerts configured for the responsible people.

The only way to learn the state of the batteries is to load them. The indicator on the case shows charge, not remaining capacity: a unit can report full readiness and last forty seconds. A test once a year answers the question honestly.

Questions and answers

Usually not. Servers need double conversion and reserve runtime, while network hardware is served by a simple unit. Splitting them is cheaper and safer: the failure of one supply does not black out everything at once.

Voltage sags are more dangerous than a full outage: the equipment does not switch off, but the power supplies wear themselves out. Here a stabiliser or a double-conversion unit helps, delivering steady voltage regardless of what happens on the input.

We judge by age and by test results. If runtime still falls short of the calculated figure after a battery change, the electronics are worn. That usually happens in the eighth to tenth year.

We will size the power and the climate control

Send the equipment list for the server room. We will calculate power, runtime and cooling.
