Installing and reinstalling the OS

The installation itself takes an hour; all the remaining time goes on returning the person to a familiar environment: mail, bookmarks, document templates, signatures, configured printers. That is exactly where people trip up when reinstalling on their own.

What the work includes

A single machine we build by hand. From about ten workstations up it pays to make a master image and clone it, so that all the computers come out identical.

We deploy from an approved list, not from whatever the owner of the machine recalls.

Passwords saved in a browser vanish for good on reinstall. For years people have signed into mail and internal systems with one click and stopped remembering the passwords themselves. Exporting the stored credentials is a compulsory preparation step; without it the first day after installation goes on restoring access.

Questions and answers

We look at the programs. If someone works in specialist Windows software, there is no choice. Where all the work happens in a browser and office documents, Linux saves on licences and behaves more steadily on weak hardware.

By then, yes. Preparing the image takes a day, but every machine after that deploys in half an hour and reaches the user with the same set of programs and settings. Building ten workstations by hand stretches into a week and produces ten different results.

Boxed and hardware-locked licences usually transfer, but each manufacturer has its own procedure. We check this before the work starts: sorting out activation after the system has already been wiped is far less pleasant.
