UI/UX web design

The work starts with the question of what a person should do on this page, and only then moves to styling. A handsome interface where the order button cannot be found is worse than a dull one: it hides the problem behind a pleasing picture.

What the work includes

There is designing behaviour and there is styling. The first comes earlier, and mistakes in it cost more than mistakes in the second.

Discuss the scope

Research

Who comes, with what task, and what they stumble over in the current interface.

Page schemes

Without colours or fonts. They are cheap to argue about and easy to change.

Mock-ups

Key pages in every state: empty, loading, error, too much data.

A set of components

Buttons, fields, spacing, typography. After that pages are assembled with no designer involved.

Narrow screen

We design from the phone up, because that is where most of the audience comes from.

Usability testing

We give a person a task and watch in silence to see where they get stuck.

How it goes

Three to five weeks for an ordinary site. Half goes on wireframes and pays for itself twice over in development.

01

Deep dive

We work through the business tasks and the user scenarios and look at the statistics if any are collected.

02

Schemes

Structure and transitions, agreed before anything is drawn.

03

Mock-ups

The styling and the component set, every state of the interface.

04

Handover

Files ready for markup, with a description of how the elements behave.

A design approved to the personal taste of a director usually loses. Liking it or not is a question for the wallpaper in the office, not for the interface. It is tested differently: give five people from the target audience a task and see whether they manage. That is cheap and almost always reveals the obvious.

Questions and answers

For a simple site, quite. A bespoke design pays for itself where the interface is unusual: a client portal, a wholesale platform, complex product selection. For an about-us page, paying extra for uniqueness is rarely justified.

To the client, and it is worth fixing that in the contract. Without the source files the next contractor starts from scratch and you pay for the design a second time.

Not to a timetable but to symptoms: the interface fails on new screen sizes, the structure has outgrown itself, the statistics show that people do not reach their goal. A refresh for the sake of freshness usually just confuses users who were used to it.

We will design the interface

Tell us about the product and about what a person should do in it. We will start with wireframes, not with pictures.
