A data centre answers for power and links, not for your data. A burnt-out disk is replaced within an hour, but restoring its contents falls to you. A contract with the platform removes neither backup nor the need to check that copies really unpack.

Questions and answers

By three signs: steady load above two thirds, the database hitting the disk subsystem, isolation requirements appearing. Until they show up, a separate machine is payment for idle capacity.

The equipment belongs to the platform, and replacing failed parts is included in the rental. That is a noticeable advantage over your own server, where waiting for a spare stretches into weeks.
