Cloud backup

An archive sitting in the same room as the server is useless in a fire, a flood or a burglary. Off-site storage covers the third part of the rule of three copies and saves anyone carrying disks home in a briefcase.

How it goes

Setup takes a few days. The first full upload depends on the bandwidth and with large volumes stretches over a week.

The full copy goes overnight or with the speed capped so the link is not saturated.

A test restore from the archive. Without that step the job is not considered done.

Recovery speed is limited by bandwidth. A terabyte over a hundred-megabit line takes more than a day. So an off-site archive is insurance against disaster, while for a fast restore you still need a copy close at hand. Neither replaces the other; they work as a pair.

Questions and answers

You pay for volume and for operations. For a mid-sized organisation the monthly bill comes out modest. Costs spiral where nobody prunes the archives, so the automatic retention periods are set on the day it is connected.

It will not: we work with sites located inside the country. The reason is not only latency - the presence of personal data in the copies makes hosting them abroad a direct breach of the processing rules.

If it is set up properly, no: the files are encrypted on your side and the key never leaves the organisation. The flip side is obvious - losing the key means losing the archive, so the rules for keeping it are written down as a separate clause.
